our story

Bringing back to life the first ever hotel in the Israeli metropolis, created in 1913 by Malka and Menahem Elkonin – a charismatic couple who immigrated from Russia with their six children who left a strong mark on the city – Elkonin Hotel Mgallery is also a place of historical significance. In the early 20th century, Elkonin relocated his entire family to the newly developed Hebrew settlement of Tel Aviv. Like many other Jewish immigrants who arrived at the time, Elkonin was inspired by the community’s greater mission to create a haven near the Holy Land free from oppression and discrimination. He subsequently decided to remain in Tel Aviv permanently and began planning to open the area’s first boutique hotel. It quickly emerged as one of Tel Aviv’s most celebrated holiday destinations, entertaining all kinds of illustrious travelers such as Albert Einstein, David Ben-Gurion, 1st Prime Minister of Israel, Chaim Weizman, 1st President of Israel, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, 2nd President of Israel, King Abdullah I of Jordan. All resided under its roof.

The historic building in which Elkonin Hotel MGallery was built has been meticulously restored. The interior designer wished to preserve the architectural modeling. A site-specific, majestic glass tower designed by Gidi Bar Orian creates a striking architectural dialogue with the historic part of the building. Its rich history inspired Dominique Romano, who acquired it in 2004 with the intention of saving the historic building, which had been abandoned. The Franco-Israeli entrepreneur has given the place a new lease on life by bringing in modernity and an incomparable art of hospitality. The dream of a luxury home and a private getaway became a reality thanks to the architect Gidi Bar Orian and the interior designer Adriana Schor, who in addition to executing the interior design, also acted as artistic director.

The hotel offers a luxuriously elegant and eclectic design while keeping the original spirit of Tel Aviv’s first-ever built hotel in the 1910s.
